Dale Earnhardt Jr. Supports Troops in Word and Deed

We heard comments from Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Claire B. Lang’s  “Dialed In” program (XM Satellite Radio, Channel 144, M-F 4-7 PM Eastern Time) yesterday that we’d like to share.

Dale Jr. has some friends in Iraq, and he takes some time to send those troops a care package or two.  He suggests on his own XM Satellite Radio program that others do the same.

He’ll sport National Guard colors on part of his #88 Chevy Impala next season at Hendrick Racing.

He did not take the bait from a reporter who was asking him to comment on deployments and policy during a news conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and we appreciated his honest response to that question.

Come to think of it…getting a care package together for those men and women who stand between us and our enemies is always in order.  Be assured we at Post 758 will put a bunch of batteries in them on December 16th.

Commander’s Comments 4th Quarter 2008

We went through a lot of drama getting ready for the National Commander’s visit. Things came together with a lot of hard work from everyone who replaced tiles, shined brass, painted doors and spruced up our 80 something year old Post Home. I thank all of the people who came over to put in extra time.
I thank everyone of you who have renewed your membership, and ask that the rest of you take action so we can become a 100% post. We are on our way to becoming a 100% Post. It’s not just about making membership quotas-it’s about building a Post where the members always feel welcome and respected, and a place where our veterans know they will receive a welcome and support. We do this with events like the third annual Power for the Troops Breakfast and battery drive on December 16. I ask that you stop by with a donation of “AA” or “AAA” alkaline batteries that Sunday, and stay for breakfast. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you in the Post 758 family.

Auxiliary Happenings for 4th Quarter of 2008

With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, it starts a busy time for all of here at post 758. I would like to start out by saying “hi and thank you” for your ladies continued support through out the  year.Remember we meet on the second TUESDAYof every month at our post home at  7:00 pm. Please try and attend to keep our communication line open between us and the Legion and Son’s. We have to continue to work together or we’re all doomed. DECEMBER 14th, 2008 is our annual “Power For The Troops” breakfast with Bill Flynn broadcasting live from our hall. Our Auxillary members will also be holding a bake sale the same morning so please come have breakfast and buy some “goodies”. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and Healthy and Happy New Year, Your President,  Carol McMurray.

Handicapped Ramp Going In/Leaf Peepers Keep Breakfast Crowd Down

handicap-ramp-during.jpg

In Progress as of October 21, 2007

Our patrons saw the forms and footers for the handicap ramp as they enjoyed our Pancake Breakfast Buffet last Sunday.  We competed with church french toast breakfasts and a picture perfect leaf peeping day, so our crowd was down.

This ramp is being installed by the Legion Memorial Corporation thanks to a member appropriation grant by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.  The wooden ramp is now in the landfill; that set of stairs on the East Side (where the wooden ramp was) will be refurbished as well.

Children’s Christmas Party in December

The Christmas Party usually held in December will not be held this year due to lack of support and general funds set aside forthi event. Santa will likely visit Post 758 on December 14, 2008. The commander of the Son’s of the American Legion Post 758 has made contact with the North Pole to schedule the visit.

Veterans Day 2007 Post 758

Since the holiday falls on November 11 (a Sunday, the same day as the pancake breakfast buffet), the open house which usually follows won’t happen this year.  Between our Legionnaires and Auxiliary members, they will be pulled in many different directions.  Our Post hosts the Broome County meeting on November 12, and a Post Meeting on November 13. So our Post will have its usual Veteran’s Day ceremony at 11 am in front of the Post Home, and about 15 minutes later at the Johnson City Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Main Street.  We will need riflemen for the firing party, so if you can help, that’d be appreciated.  Help with the breakfast buffet is also appreciated as well, so those who usually work the breakfast, may participate in the ceremony.

Post Membership at 67%, October Report

As of October 8, 2007, Post 758 was credited with 143 memberships.  When counted against the quota of 216, this is a percentage of 67%.  This leaves us 73 members to go before we can reach the 100% goal (renewals, transfers, new members, etc.).  Stan Smith, our first vice, is getting back on his feet (literally) and will appreciate your speedy renewal, or recruitment of a new eligible member for our Post.  So too will our future members–because membership is the engine that drives the train.  It is that membership which will build a Post where those new members and their spouses will feel welcome and inspired to serve, and continue the Post 758 tradition, since 1921.

Pancake Breakfast #2 On October 21, 2007

Our Second Pancake Breakfast Buffet will be held at the Post Home, 429 Main Street, Johnson City, NY  13790 on October 21, 2007 from 8am-noon.

If you go away hungry from this activity, it is not our fault.  Hope to see you there!
